The Luling Area

Luling, Texas is located 58 mi east of downtown San Antonio; along the San Marcos River.  It’s territory is split between Caldwell and Guadalupe counties.  The city is named after Charles Luling, a New York banker who provided the funding for the railroad and land that would become Luling.  The railroad town was a central point for cattle drivers on the Chrisholm Trail.  Lawless cowboys are responsible for the town’s early reputation as the “Toughest town in Texas”.

By the 1880’s, the town matured into a cotton farming district with a population of about 500, which experienced a gradual growth to approximately 1500 by the mid 1920’s.  In 1922, a well owned by Edgar B Davis (the discoverer) stuck oil at 2161 feet.  This produced 150 barrels of oil per day, of which many were contracted to Atlantic Oil and Magnolia Oil to repay debt.  The 12x2 mile oil triggered the turning of the economy towards oil and away from the railroads in the 1930’s.
